I couldn't figure out "of the ride". The emphasis just doesn't work for normal speech.

that's cuz it's not normal speech.. :p

actualy we were discussing this (not specifically this song) in my linguistics class the other day. that's the reason why singers with the most atrocious accents when they speak sound almost accent-less when they sing: cuz all the normal rhythms and intonations and stuff they would have while speaking[1] - which we dont notice as much as pronunciation but still play a big part - get sacrificed to the music

[1] it never fails to confuse me that speak has "ea" for the verbs, but speech has "ee". i get it backwards every time

I heard somewhere once that it's technically impossible to sing with an accent. I think the chick from The Sundays proved that wrong...
