on a similar note (alphabetically speaking), i need to get a boston cd. any suggestions of which? i have various mp3s of them which are nifty, my favorites are "higher power" and "peace of mind" but i dont really know much about them. and my live version of "more than a feeling", the mp3 when i got it was for some terrifying reason attributed to godsmack (i thought it was a cover when i was dling it and was quite excited to hear it). but no, turns out someone was just insane

I saw them in '86 or '87 on the Third Stage tour. My brothers saw them in '78 or '79 on the Don't Look Back tour (with Sammy Hagar as the opening act). I've got the third album on vinyl, and the first two on CD. My brothers originaly had the first two albums on 8-track. I grew up listening to them constantly.

My favourite's still the first one, conveniently titled 'Boston'. ;-) 'More than a Feeling' is on there, as is 'Smokin'' and ... hell, gobs of the famous Boston songs. Very good album.

"Smokin'" is on Don't Look Back. Fear my 1337 Boston knowledge.

LIES!!!!!

Okay, actually, I confused myself here. The reason I was thinking it was on Don't Look Back is that was the most neglected album when I saw them in concert. They played Third Stage straight through from beginning to end, and all except one from the first album, but only played about half of Don't Look Back. Smokin' is indeed the only one they didn't play on the first, which pissed me off.

I kind of mentioned this in reply to Jamie, but it was '86 or '87 (I'd have to find my concert t-shirt to find an exact date ;-) ).

No, the severely cool part was that I was there with the woman I loved more than life itself... *sigh*

I humbly present to you...

In order of greatness:

Boston
Don't Look Back
Third Stage
Whatever crap came after that

The first album is the best and you probably know almost all the songs already if you've ever listened to a classic rock station for more than a day. Don't Look Back has quite a few good songs (and Smokin', which I consider their best, though the bastards didn't play it when I saw them in concert). Third Stage had some beautiful ballads, but outside of 'Amanda' and 'Holly Ann', there's really not anything terribly memorable. They weren't even really a band by that point anyway. Tom Scholz played all the instruments on the album and Brad sang. They regrouped for the tour, but you can tell on the album things aren't right and in concert it just didn't work as well as when they did their old stuff.

Anything after Third Stage is to be considered an abomination that should not have the Boston name associated with it.
