this is a super day. my 1 class was cancelled and the rem best of cd i won from fnx came in teh mail today. i went to a feminist thingamabob with julie and now i'm in hte aegis office. soon i will write a stern letter to TNH responding to some other letters in TNH, then i will read until fencing, then i will go to bullmoose with kevin.

in other news, apparently my roomies got their net connections back, but mine still doesn't work. *blank stare* so i guess i'll have to randomly poke at wires until things work again. also, the mansion has officially now been titled The Mansion of Love. diggity.
np: rem - at my most beautiful

speaking of TNH letters...did you see that one by the stupid fucking idiot christian kid? comparing episcopaleans to godhatesfags people? I am positively seething. this is the same kid who lamented about others mocking "his" god. what a hypocrite. i've been noticing how selfish people are being about the whole consecration. i don't like it, therefore its wrong. it makes me uncomfortable. or those that think the US is disregarding the rest of the world. uh HELLO. episcopal churches are parishes that are AUTONOMOUS.

colleen can you explain how the episcopal church is set up? i don't get it. they're autonomous, but there's that head bishop dude who runs the US, and people keep saying this is gonna cause a schism and split the church, which sounds like theyve got some kinda unity

Well its confusing because it depends on what level you are looking at.

Individual Episcopal churches form parishes. Parishes are a subdivision of dioceses. Dioceses are the fundamental unit of church administration and governance, which combine administratively to form provinces. provinces can also be refered to as national churches, like the epicopal church of the USA. basically the priest heads the parish, the bishop heads the dioceses, and *if* there is a national church or province, then there is a Archbishop or Presiding Bishop.

going back to the dioceses, the bishops are thought of as the "spiritual successors of the Apostles." in theory they are a chain leading back to the 12 apostles. not sure if i buy that...

when you talk of autonomy, you have to remember that the anglican church was split from the catholic church, and the catholic church belives that you have a pope who is closest to god. What it means for a province or national church to be "autonomous" is that there is no larger administrative unit to supervises it: no pope, no cardinals, no patriarch.

it gets really confusing because sometimes you can have provinces that are autonomous and sometimes they combine to form national churches which are autonomous. So the episcopal church USA is autonomous from the national episcopal church of say, canada. When they warn of a schism, i think it means that you could have churches in america break away from the american church to form their own province. When they talk about the whole church having a schism its kinda confusing to me. because there is no "pope" that the church all follows, there is no heirarchy in that sense. There are however periodic meetings called "general conventions." In america, they recently had one where all the bishops who head dioceses in america meet, and thats were they voted to accept gene's nominmation. While most bishops probably didn't agree with gene becoming bishop, it would have been rare for them to vote it down because he was chosen by the NH episcopaleans..who are if you think about it, autonomous. Its tough because if all dioceses are autonomous, then youd want to ask why have a general convention. but the purpose of the general convention is for the church to "form its rules, elects its officials, and unify its doctrines." America has its own general convention, but there is also a general convention where all the Archbishops meet, i think they are refered to as primates. thats only every 10 years though. i looked it up, and basically they debate doctrine there, but it is not "binding on any member churches unless they choose to modify their own canons to be bound by them" but, *IF* a church rejects too much of the doctrine..then they may be unwelcome to take part in the anglican community. so i guess consecrating gene could fall under this category, but i don't know who would split, the USA province, or the NH..I think the only people who would split would be the more conservative churches..but it depends who goes with them. it might not be worth the split if only a handful want to go. But hey, they warned of a schism when the first women was ordained in the 70s, and they got through that. this is definietly going to be harder, but i think with time it will be alright. whoewer wants to leave, they can be shown the door on the way out.

p.s

(Link)
i hope that all made sense. when you talk about the "head bishop dude" ..he would be the archbishop of canterbury. he is more the media spokesman for the church than its leader. he is the archbishop of the province in england, but he basically has the same job as the archbishop of the american episcopal church i think.I believe he was just chosen to 'represent' the church, but he holds NO power, like the pope does.

whew. i guess all those long hours spent earning my confirmation just got paid off. though i had to look up some stuff.
